Why is ambulance written backwards?

Why is "ambulance" written backwards on the front of those emergency vehicles?

ANS: To alert those who have failed to notice the flashing lights and the howling sirens, who will then see the word filling their rear-view mirrors - the right way round - and hopefully get out of the way!
